The diet is always with us. We tend to associate it with slimming regimes, but the word ‘diet‘ means a way of feeding and can be applied to many conditions besides weight problems. Medical diets for diabetics, heart patients and others are designed and supervised by dieticians and doctors, but slimming diets are available to all who want to try them and if we decide to follow one then we need to know how to get the best out of it. Most of the diets in the popular press and magazines today are compiled by nutritionists and dieticians and they are well balanced to include all the vitamins and minerals we need each day but, without exception, they will contain less food than we are used to eating. The well-balanced diet is an ideal we should all aim for, but with the best will in the world we often fall short or exceed the amounts and mixtures of foods we should eat each day. Diet is controlled by so many external factors. To begin with, as every housewife knows, there is a matter of budget; housekeeping money, whether limited or abundant, never seems to embrace all the things we would like to buy for the family. Buying for vitamins is seldom the first thought in the shopper’s mind. The list will be drawn up according to custom, likes and dislikes, time available for cooking, age and occupation of the family. Part of the food will be ‘for fun’ because, even on a minimal budget, there is always an element of madness in the shopping when money disappears on sweets, alcohol and luxury items rather than the so-called ’sensible foods‘.
